Canada’s Ocean Supercluster Announces $15.5M Revolutionary Seaweed Restoration & Cultivation Project

November 27, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(VANCOUVER, BC) – Today Canada’s Ocean Supercluster announced three new ocean innovation projects valued at $22.1 million, including the $15.5 million Enabling Scalable Seaweed Restoration & Cultivation Project led by Canadian Pacifico Seaweeds.

This project aims to revolutionize seaweed seeding technology through the development and commercialization of KelpSpat™. This breakthrough adhesive and automation system improves kelp seed survival rates by up to 400 per cent, enabling large-scale sustainable cultivation and seaforestation.

The project is led by Richmond, BC-based Canadian Pacifico Seaweeds, with 13 partners and collaborators across aquaculture, Indigenous communities, non-profits, and academia. Partners include Bamfield, BC-based Canadian Kelp Resources Ltd, Vancouver, BC-based Bioform Technologies Inc, Campbell River, BC-based Wei Wai Kum First Nation, and Vancouver, BC-based Inbada Holdings.

With a total project value of $15.5 million, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster is investing $5.8 million, with the balance of funding coming from project partners.

The project includes trials at Indigenous-stewarded farms and explores commercialization pathways for food-grade seaweed, functional foods, performance ingredients, bioplastics feedstock, and regenerative ocean conservation. It supports rural communities, strengthens aquaculture, and contributes to global ocean health, while positioning Canada as a global leader in cold-water seaweed cultivation and exports. It also provides the opportunity to tap into the $1.3 billion global edible dried seaweed market, as well as related food system markets such as plant health and animal nutrition through agricultural programs – leveraging Canada’s cold-water advantage and growing expertise in sustainable seaweed farming. With projections that the global seaweed industry alone will reach $28 billion annually by 2050, there is substantial room for growth in this sector.

Through Ambition 2035 and together with Canada’s ocean community, we are bold in our ambition to grow Canada’s ocean economy 5X to $220 billion by 2035. Continued investment in the accelerated development and commercialization of globally relevant, made in Canada ocean solutions will help us realize this ambition. Designed for vessels over 40 feet, the new high-performance, water-lubricated wood bearings offer significant benefits over conventional metal and synthetic composites, including reduced wear and failure rates, elimination of oil discharge, improved fuel efficiency, and a PFAS-free composition – supporting both economic and environmental performance.

The project will also support job creation, with 50 new roles in bearing manufacturing, engineering, and installation across Atlantic Canada and Ontario.

Through enhanced maritime resilience, this project will bolster industry competitiveness and showcase Canadian leadership in sustainable ocean technology.

Through Ambition 2035 and together with Canada’s ocean community, we are bold in our ambition to grow Canada’s ocean economy 5X to $220 billion by 2035. Continued investment in the accelerated development and commercialization of globally relevant, made in Canada ocean solutions, including the projects announced today, will help us realize this ambition. Canada’s Ocean Supercluster Announces $1.1M Uncrewed Surface Vehicle (USV) Enhanced Offshore Fishing Project

June 10, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(HALIFAX) – Canada’s Ocean Supercluster today announced five new ocean innovation projects worth over $18 million during the H20 Conference in Halifax, including the $1.1 million Uncreweded Surface Vehicle (USV) Enhanced Offshore Fishing Project led by ABCO.

This project is led by Lunenberg, NS-based ABCO, in partnership with Clearwater Seafoods, also in Lunenberg. With a total project value of $1.1 million, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster is investing $459,200, with the balance of funding coming from project partners.

The project aims to modernize and improve collection of crucial benthic habitat data to support the sustainability of Canada’s commercial bottom fishing industry using cutting-edge USVs. Thes USVs, equipped with new R2Sonic sensor technology, will be deployed and retrieved during active trawling and dredging operations, improving feasibility and cost effectiveness of data collection. Accessibility of hydrographic surveys and ecosystem data benefits both the fishing industry and the broader ocean ecosystem, improving our understanding of habitats and fishery population dynamics while allowing the industry to further reduce its bottom footprint.

The project will drive sustainable economic growth in one of Canada’s largest ocean sectors by promoting more efficient and environmentally conscious fishing practices. In addition to supporting commercialization, it will help expand Canada’s technical workforce by training USV pilots, including retired captains, and employing recent graduates for data analysis roles.

By optimizing dredging operations and fostering job creation across rural Nova Scotia, this project supports not only its immediate partners, but the wider commercial fisheries sector, helping to build a more sustainable and prosperous future for Canada’s ocean economy.

It’s a strong example of how industry and emerging technologies can come together to drive real impact.” – Kendra MacDonald, CEO, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster

Canada’s Ocean Supercluster Announces $7.2M Microbial Protein for Sustainable Aquaculture Project

June 10, 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(HALIFAX) – Canada’s Ocean Supercluster today announced five new ocean innovation projects worth over $18 million during the H20 Conference in Halifax, including the $7.2 million Microbial Protein for Sustainable Aquaculture Project led by DeNova.

This new project is set to transform aquaculture feed production with the development of a novel microbial protein – an innovative and sustainable alternative to conventional aquafeed ingredients like fishmeal and soy, which are major contributors to aquaculture’s environmental footprint.

As aquafeed remains one of the biggest barriers to the growth of sustainable seafood, this project directly addresses a critical challenge in the ocean economy. By advancing responsible food production technologies, the initiative supports the expansion of Canada’s aquaculture industry while reducing environmental impact.

The project is led by Dartmouth, NS-based DeNova, in partnership with The Verschuren Centre in Sydney, NS, and Neptune Properties in Dartmouth. With a total project value of $7.2 million, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster is investing $2.5 million, with the balance of funding coming from project partners.

With global demand for sustainable protein rising, this project brings Canada to the forefront of next-generation aquaculture solutions, supporting a resilient, inclusive, and environmentally responsible ocean economy. It also strengthens Canada’s position as a global leader in sustainable aquafeed, while driving economic growth through job creation in biotechnology and feed manufacturing, including an expected nine full time positions.
