{"id":2301,"date":"2021-02-17T17:21:54","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T17:21:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oceansupercluster.ca\/?p=2301"},"modified":"2021-02-17T17:21:54","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T17:21:54","slug":"katal-project-orca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oceansupercluster.ca\/fr\/katal-project-orca\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Orca &#8211; Projet ORCA"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"g-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2307\" src=\"https:\/\/oceansupercluster.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Project-ORCA-Katal-Mock-Up-6-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Canada\u2019s Ocean Supercluster Announces $4.25M Project ORCA<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><em>One of Three Accelerated Ocean Solutions Program Projects Announced on Feb. 17<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>On Feb. 17, 2021, Canada\u2019s Ocean Supercluster announced three new projects with a total value of $12 million from its Accelerated Ocean Solutions Program (AOSP) stream, including <em>Project ORCA<\/em>. <em>Project ORCA<\/em> is the Ocean Supercluster\u2019s first Alberta-led project, and brings together SMEs, academia, and other partners in ocean innovation to advance the development of Katal Green Fuel ahead of commercialization to reduce dependency on diesel and transition to low-carbon fuels. The project will benefit Canadians by creating seven jobs immediately, an additional 42 jobs within three years, and the potential for 210 indirect jobs throughout the project\u2019s lifespan. <em>Project<\/em> <em>ORCA<\/em> will generate new economic activity, helping grow the ocean economy in a digital, sustainable, and inclusive way.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/b7Hzpi9iEAQ\">Watch the Announcement here:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/b7Hzpi9iEAQ\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that 80-90 per cent of international trade by volume is conducted across oceans. There is an opportunity to provide a lower carbon fuel for ocean vessels, harbour vessels, cruise ships, ferries, barges, terminal operations, refueling operations, and other marine machinery. Katal Energy is proposing a start to reducing reliance on diesel and transitioning to low-carbon fuels. <em>Project ORCA<\/em> will address capability challenges of the technology, providing a working demonstration of the technical and structural needs of the marine transportation industry.<\/p>\n<p>With a total project value of $4.25 million, the Ocean Supercluster will provide $2 million in funding, with $2.25 million coming from industry partners. Led by Katal Energy project partners include Valent Low Carbon Technologies, Horizon Maritime, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), Mitacs, Deepsense, and Spearhead Manufacturing to advance the technology readiness level of Katal Green Fuel.<\/p>\n<p><em>Project<\/em> <em>ORCA <\/em>will enable Katal to introduce Green Fuel to market by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Extending their work beyond the laboratory environment to the field;<\/li>\n<li>Collecting necessary fuel performance and emissions data;<\/li>\n<li>Incorporating customer feedback;<\/li>\n<li>Working to prove scalability, supply chain logistics and storage capacities; and<\/li>\n<li>Defining the commercial process considerations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Quotes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ocean Supercluster is changing the way business is done and positioning Canada as a global leader in the ocean economy.
