World Ocean Day 2021: One Ocean, One Climate, One Future \u2013 Together<\/strong><\/p>\n

You may have heard me speak more than once about the momentum that\u2019s building, the opportunity ahead, and the role we all play in the future of our ocean \u2013 this is a message worth repeating. In just over a week, on World Ocean Day, the world will come together around the theme of \u201cOne Ocean, One Climate, One Future \u2013 Together.\u201d This is an important conversation for the world and for Canada \u2013 not just on June 8th but also as we consider what we need to do to best manage this incredible resource that has provided for us for centuries and will serve as an instrumental driver in achieving our environmental and economic targets now and in the future. I wanted to share reflections on a couple of increasingly important topics on this journey.<\/p>\n

Net-zero\u00a0<\/strong>
\nThe conversation around moving to net-zero is accelerating around the world.\u00a0\u00a0The United States, with new leadership, rejoined the Paris\u00a0Agreement and hosted a virtual leader\u2019s summit on climate change on World Earth Day with several countries speaking about their commitment to the environment and climate change goals.\u00a0\u00a0The President shared in his remarks that \u201cCountries who take decisive action now to create the industries of the future will be the ones that reap the economic benefits of the clean energy boom that\u2019s\u00a0coming.\u201d This conversation is expected to continue to accelerate as we move towards the UN Climate Change Conference,\u00a0Cop26 in Glasgow<\/a>\u00a0in November. Canada\u00a0continues to build on its commitment to climate action in\u00a0Budget 2021<\/a>\u00a0proposing to provide $17.6\u202fbillion towards a green recovery to create jobs, build a clean economy, and fight and protect against climate change.<\/p>\n

Covering 70 per cent of the planet, our ocean\u202fis absorbing\u202fsignificant amounts of\u202fcarbon and\u202fexhibiting\u202fincreasing impacts of climate change.\u202fA recent article in\u202fThe Conversation\u202f<\/a>talks about the key role of the North Atlantic as the\u202fmost intense carbon sink in the world and\u202fits importance in our net-zero future.\u00a0\u00a0Any net-zero conversation needs to consider not only the actions we are taking on land but those that\u00a0need to be taken in the ocean.\u00a0\u00a0As an example, as discussed at the\u00a0recent Seaweed Days\u00a0event\u00a0in BC, seaweed\u00a0has an important role to play\u00a0in absorbing CO2.\u00a0Net-zero\u00a0is also an increasing focus of our supercluster projects with themes like electrification, carbon capture and alternative fuels.\u00a0Two other\u00a0examples of\u00a0initiatives over the last few months include the launch of the\u00a0Centre for Ocean Applied Sustainable Technologies<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Clean Resource Innovation Network<\/a>\u2019s launch of their competitions, both working to contribute to the journey towards net-zero.<\/p>\n

While we have always spoken about the balance of ocean health and ocean wealth, now is the time to ensure we keep both in mind\u00a0not only as Canada\u00a0develops\u00a0its\u00a0Blue Economy\u00a0Strategy<\/a>\u00a0but also as a key part of Canada\u2019s climate action investments.<\/p>\n

Inclusion\u00a0<\/strong>
\nTo achieve our ocean ambition for Canada, we need to bring all perspectives to the conversation. The OSC is a participant in\u00a0Canada\u2019s 50-30\u00a0Challenge<\/a>\u00a0actively\u00a0working to increase diversity in our team. I am excited to\u00a0follow the\u00a0Indigenous Career Pivot Pilot\u00a0webseries\u00a0videos<\/a>\u00a0and get some perspective on the\u00a0journey\u00a0of those participating in this pilot. Our Ocean Allies project has issued its\u00a0Navigating Change<\/a>\u00a0report looking at some of the barriers to inclusion in the ocean economy\u00a0and has been hosting a series of coffee chats to create a space for this important conversation. I also had the opportunity to participate in a recent diversity forum and\u00a0hear more about the\u00a0challenges faced by people with disabilities, impressed by how much these individuals have\u00a0achieved in the face of these challenges.\u00a0\u00a0There is still much to do to create equal opportunities for all.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0am inspired by the momentum we have already achieved across Canada and\u00a0believe we have opportunities\u00a0to lead\u00a0the world\u00a0through an ocean economy that is digital, sustainable and inclusive. Our many projects demonstrate a commitment to this vision by project participants\u00a0along with the increasing number of ocean-related activities across the country.\u00a0 This is not only a big year for the Ocean Supercluster but for the entire Canadian ocean economy as we continue to position ourselves to take\u00a0advantage of the\u00a0sustainable growth\u00a0opportunity our ocean represents\u00a0on the path to economic recovery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
