Market Solutions Platform

Market Solutions Platform (MSP) is a strategic initiative to advance the commercial viability of ocean-climate solutions. The platform will help create conditions for the market to develop and scale to realize the potential impact against climate change and the economic opportunity these solutions represent.

Context of Current Challenge

The ocean is a critical enabler of our transition to a low-carbon economy and represents a significant economic opportunity for Canada. However, ocean-based climate solutions are value-chain based and will only be as strong as the weakest link.

Significant efforts are currently underway across scientific research, technology development, policy advancement, and community engagement related components of ocean-based climate solutions. While these efforts are critically important, they are not enough on their own to make these solutions economically viable or scalable. It is imperative that the market development components are advanced in parallel, which is a crucial gap across the sector.

MSP is aimed at addressing this gap.

Vision

To accelerate the development of markets for ocean-based climate solutions to realize their potential impact on climate change and the economic opportunity they represent.

Start-ups

Mission

To become a platform for development of market solutions to address the critical gaps across the value-chain that will hinder the commercial viability and scale-up opportunity for ocean-based climate solutions in the foreseeable future.

Guiding Principles

The overall approach for identification, prioritization, and solution development for problems will be informed by key guiding principles.

  • Materiality
Focus on the most critical problems that are, and will continue to, hinder growth of ocean-based climate solutions.
  • Integrated
Focus on needs across the end-to-end value chain rather than a siloed perspective.
  • Ecosystem-based
Undertake an ecosystem-based approach by partnering with select organizations from relevant domains across the value-chain as core partners and leverage the collective strength of the coalition.
  • Additive and Complimentary
Focus on problems not being addressed; and if they are, then complement those efforts.
  • Iterative and Impactful
An iterative approach for continuous value realization in the field to drive ongoing impact.
  • Leading-edge
Leverage leading-edge research being conducted by academic institutions and accelerate their advancement to proof-of-concepts and ultimately market solutions; if needed, initiate the required research.

The outputs from the Market Solutions Platform will be a portfolio of solution-enablement assets and will vary by the nature of the problem being addressed. Examples include proof of concepts, funding constructs, case studies, leading practices, or applied frontier research.

Ecosystem-Based Approach

A fundamental design element of MSP is an ecosystem-based approach that leverages a network-of-network model. Efforts and direction of MSP will be guided and informed by the insights and expertise of a Strategic Advisory Team (SAT) that is comprised of senior climate-business leaders with expertise in finance, capital markets and carbon management, as well as our institutional collaboration partners.

MSP’s SAT is comprised of Andrew Babbin, Michael Berger, Ross Brooks, Jeff Brown, Ryan Fan, Steven Fox, Matt Kielek, John Lochner, Jim Mann, and Larsen Mettler.

Institutional Collaboration Partners

We are thankful to our institutional collaboration partners for their active partnership on this initiative.
